The Hunger Games Review

If you like book adaptations that follow the book. And a great movie, even if you did not read the book.  Then The Hunger Games is for you. The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mallark , Amandla Stenberg as Rue, Dayo Okeniyi as Thresh, Alexander Ludwig as Cato, Jack Quaid as Marvel, Leven Rambin as Glimmer, Isabelle Fuhrman as Clove, Jacqueline Emerson as Foxface, Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, Lenny Kravktz as Cinna, Stanley Tucci as Ceaser Flickerman, Wes Bently as Secena Crane, Donald Sutherland as President Snow, Toby Jones as Cladius Templesmith, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, and Willow Shields as Prim.

The Hunger Games is about a ruling tyrannical government called the Capitol that rules a nation called Panem. Every year they make the 12 districts that make up Panem sacrifice 1 young man and 1 young woman to fight in the Hunger Games. After Katniss’s sister Prim is picked for her district, she volunteers for her sister.  Her and Peeta ( the male tribute) travel to The Capitol to fight in the 74th Annual Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games is an amazing adaptation of an amazing book, and is an amazing movie. Unlike some movies, this one follows the plot of the book very well and does not make many changes. One major change is that the movie includes additional scenes set in the Capitol. It is a good change though because it shows the behind the scenes of the games.  The major extra scenes are in the gamemaker’s control center which shows how the hazards are put in. It is very cool because you see them create the hazard digitally and then insert them in into the arena.

It is also an amazing movie. The arena scenes are amazing and just like in the book. They are just as visceral and gory. There is a jump scene in the “finale” of the game portion of the movie. It works and makes you jump. The main problem with the games of the movie is that it moves too fast. The good part about that though is that it goes from action secne to action secne.

The Capitol parts of the movie are also amazing. The costumes reflect the book’s descriptions wonderfully. The residents worship the Games and look foward to them every year. Ceaser Flickerman is an over the top funny character who is very enthusiastic about them. He enthusiastically interviews every tribute before the games begin. Effie is played by Elizabeth Banks, who is unrecognizable under the crazy costume. The character speaks with a ridiculous accent that for some reason the other Capitol  characters don’t.  The training sequence shows the alliances forming and shows each character’s strength. The private session scene stays the same  with the apple getting an arrow through the mouth.  The tribute parade has the costumes and Katniss’s and Peeta’s are portrayed just like in the book. Overall, The Hunger Games is amazing and faithfully adapts a great book.

The Hunger Games is rated PG-13 for intense violent thematic material and disturbing images – all involving teens. It is not as gory as it could be. It is quick flashes that convey what is happening without showing all the gore.  I give The Hunger Games a firey A+!
