Rock Of Ages Review

If you like comical movie musicals then Rock of Ages is for you. It stars Julianne Hough as Sherrie Christian, Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, Alec Baldwin as Dennis Dupree, Russel Brand as Lonny, and Paul Giamatti as Paul Gill.

Rock of Ages is set to 80’s rock hits. It has two story lines. The first is about 2 young people falling in love. The second revolves around an aging rock club efforts to stay open while the mayor’s wife wants to shut down all the clubs. The club needs to raise money quickly to pay their taxes.

Rock of Ages is over the top and funny. It is full of 80’s rock hits from Journey, Foreigner, Def Leppard, etc. Since the movie is an adaptation of a Broadway musical (with the same name), the characters break into songs during the movie, attempting to act naturally. Those parts are campy. Alec Baldwin and Russel Brand are both hilarious, especially when they sing ” I Can’t Fight This Feeling”.  I don’t know if they meant for this  be serious or not but it comes off as comic not serious.  Other characters sing as well, including Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise).  He has a monkey named Hey-Man who dresses in different outfits and is a main point of comedy. Overall, Rock of Ages is a over the top crazy rocking movie musical.

Rock of Ages is rated PG-13 for sexual content, suggestive dancing, some heavy drinking, and language. That rating barely does the movie’s content justice. Stacee Jaxx ( played convincingly by Tom Cruise) is a womanizing drunk rocker. He is the main reason this could have been rated R. There is also some suggestive dancing like the rating says. The rest of the rating is accurate. Overall, I give Rock of Ages a rocking B+.
