The Impossible Review

Posted in On DVD by - December 21, 2012

If you like gripping survival dramas then The Impossible is for you. It stars Naomi Watts as Maria, Ewan McGregor as Henry, Tom Holland as Lucas, Samuel Joslin as Thomas and Oaklee Pendergast as Simon.

The Impossible is the true story of a family visiting Thailand. They happen to be visiting during December 2004. The tsunami strikes while they are at the beachside resort pool. The family is separated. Early in the movie (this is in the trailer, not a spoiler), the oldest son and mother find each other and the father and the younger sons also find each other. They all must reunite and get back home.

The Impossible is an inspiration survival drama. The family members all must search for each other. The mother is severely injured yet has the courage to continue looking along with the eldest son Lucas. The father keeps looking for the younger sons and then once he finds them, does not give up looking for the mother and the other son. The story is a true message of courage and perseverance, even in the face of danger. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor give great performances and both deserve awards consideration. Tom Holland as Lucas is also great (and also deserves awards consideration)  having to do a lot of emotional weight lifting after the mother goes to the hospital and is immobile for the rest of the movie.Okalee Pendergast and Samuel Joslin are also very good in their small roles.  The movie is very emotional, so if you cry at movies, bring a lot of Kleenex. Overall, The Impossible is a emotionally gripping survival drama.

The Impossible is rated PG-13 for intense realistic disaster sequences, including disturbing injury images and brief nudity.
