The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey Review

The HobbitIf you like epic adventuremovies, then The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey is for you. It stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Ian McKellen as Gandalf.

The Hobbit starts with Bilbo recalling the adventure which the movie follows. The younger Bilbo and Gandalf are talking and Gandalf leaves a strange mark on the door. Later that night, dwarves start showing up at his house. Eventually, Bilbo learns that they are going on a quest to reclaim the dwarves homeland from the evil dragon Smaug ( who is not shown at all until a little at the very end of the movie), who took the land from them and is guarding it. Bilbo reluctantly joins them on their quest.

The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey is a epic adventure movie. It is better then the first 2 original Lord of the Rings movies and is just as good as Return of the King ( the best one in my opinion).  It is not just endless walking. There are more battles in this movie than you would expect. It also has excellent cinematography.  There are many great shots and they show the natural beauty of New Zealand ( where this was filmed) and how New Zealand can substitute for Middle-Earth.  There are also many cameos from people from the original Lord of the Rings movies. They include: Frodo, Elrond, Gladriel, Saruman, and Gollum. Gollum in particular has the biggest and longest appearance. I have not read the book so I do not know how many cameos were added in for the movie and how many are in the book that this is based off of.  There is also comic relief with the dwarves and with some trolls that the company runs into.  It is a light  toned movie with content for adults and children and never gets too dark.  Overall, The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey is an epic effects adventure movie with comic relief.

Tech Review : I was lucky enough to catch The Hobbit in 48fps. That means it is 48 frames per second, not the usual 24 frames per second. The result is a more clear, more vivid and much better looking visuals.  The Hobbit looks very good in 48fps and adds a lot more depth. It looks like you are watching a brand new HDTV on the big screen. This movie is the kind of movie that 48fps works for. The effects are better, the cinematography is amazing, and overall it is a clearer picture. If there is one playing The Hobbit in 48fps near you, I strongly recommended going to see it in 48fps.  It is worth a little longer drive to the theater. Overall, the 48fps makes the Hobbit a better looking movie.

The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey is rated PG-13 for extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence, and frightening images. I give the Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey an A+!
