If you like remakes of fairy tales then Jack the Giant Slayer is for you. It is an updated version of the classic fairy tale. Jack needs to sell the horse and cart for money at the market. While he is out, he rescues a girl that turns out to be the princess. He sells the horse and cart to a monk who gives him beans with instructions to not get them wet. Later, he is at his home when a girl comes by that turns out to be the princess. They are talking when it begins to rain and the beans get wet and a giant beanstalk grows out of the ground taking the princess with it. In the morning, Jack wakes up to see the king and his knights ready to climb the beanstalk and rescue the princess.
Jack The Giant Slayer is a modernized version of the classic fairy tale. It is in the style of last year’s Snow White and the Huntsman. Like that movie, it is a good action filled modernization with comic relief. The movie was delayed from last June to March to work on the CGI and it is obvious because they are very good. The giants are huge, detailed and varied, even during the action set pieces which can go from large scale with burning trees to medium size interior shots of the giant’s castle or the humans. There is also comic relief present throughout. Overall, Jack the Giant Slayer is a good remake of a classic fairy tale.
Jack the Giant Slayer is rated PG-13 for intense scenes of fantasy action violence, some frightening images and brief language. I give Jack the Giant Slayer a digital B.
