If you like great epic dramas with great acting and direction then The Place Beyond the Pines is for you. It stars Ryan Gosling as Luke Glanton, Bradley Cooper as Avery Cross, Eva Mendes as Romina, and Dane DeHann as Jason.
The Place Beyond the Pines starts when motor bike stuntman Luke runs into his former flame Romina after one of his shows. He finds out that Romina has had his child and quits to be able to be around the child. He turns to bank robbing to get money and runs into Avery who is a new cop.
This movie is a great epic drama with great acting, direction, and musical score. It is truly epic, taking place over years, and having multiple story lines and a lot of characters. The characters and story lines all connect and intersect with varying results for each character, while never getting hard to follow. It is more of one character does something and the consequences are then seen later in the movie. It is a little dark and depressing in most parts, but it does match the plot. The movie is also very long, clocking in at 140 min or 2hr 20 min. The different story lines help make this runtime feel nowhere near as long as it really is.
The movie also tackles themes of fathership, responsibilty, family, and how choices you make can affect things later in life.
The acting is also great with standout scenes for both of the main actors. These moments are spread out in each part of the movie. They allow you to really feel the emotion because of the great and powerful acting on screen.
The direction is great as well at setting the atmosphere for the movie. There are also a few great landscape shots and one that happens multiple times that is well done each time it occurs.
The score also adds, kicking in at the right moments bolstering what is occurring on screen and setting the tone. The score is made up of some cool electric guitar beats and also some very foreboding tracks that play at the perfect time. There is also 1 that repeats often with an emotional meaning every time. Overall, The Place Beyond the Pines is a great epic drama with great acting, direction, and score.
The Place Beyond the Pines is rated R for language throughout, some violence, teen drug and alcohol use, and a sexual reference. That is an accurate rating. This movie is a adult movie. I give The Place Beyond the Pines an epic A+.
