Super 8 Review

If you like retro sci-fi classic style movies then Super 8 is for you. It stars Joel Courtney as Joe Lamb, Ryan Lee as Cary,Zach Mills as Preston,Riley Griffiths as Charles,Gabriel Basso as Martin,Elle Fanning as Alice Dainard ,Kyle Chandler as as Jackson Lamb,Ron Eldard as Louis Dainard, and Noah Emmeric as Nelec. The movie was written and directed by J. J. Abrams.

Super 8 is about of bunch of middle schoolers who are filming a horror movie. 1 night they are filming a movie, a train and a car collide and explode. The train was an Air Force train and had  a secret cargo. The military comes in and attemps to clean up the mess. People start vanishing, dogs start going missing, and the town goes into chaos. The kids still try to film and figure out what was on the train. The military tries to keep it secret, and the police try to investigate the military’s secret and also figure out what was on the train.

Super 8 is a great retro sci-fi movie. It feels like a movie a young Spielberg would have made back at the beginning of his career. The director, J.J. Abrams, who also directed the new Star Trek movie, is shaping up to be a great new director with hopefully more movies like this coming soon.

Super 8 has the right mix of sci-fi,humor, and character drama along with some horror. It also feels retro with the movie being set in the past and all of their camera equipment being old. As they film, they use old cameras and makeup. The movie doesn’t rely on special effects. The movie the kids are making is very campy and is shown during the credits.

There is also horror. The monster strikes in jump scenes but not when you expect him to. When the monster is fully seen, it is looks cool and almost like a combination of different aliens, monsters, and creatures from when the movie is set and present day. Overall, Super 8 is a great retro sci – fi movie.

Super 8 is rated PG-13 for  intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language and some drug use. I give Super 8 a retro A.
