103_mud-2013_853BIf you like very good movies then Mud is for you. It stars Matthew McConaughey as Mud, Tye Sheridan as Ellis, Resse Witherspoon as Juniper, Jacob Loftand as Neckbone, Sam Shepard as Tom Blankenship, and Micheal Shannon as Galen.

Mud starts when Ellis and Neckbone head to an island where the boat is located. Upon arrival, they see that their boat is occupied and upon leaving they run into Mud. They make a deal for food in excchange for the boat. They do that but eventually learn of Mud’s plight and decide to help him escape the island and get his girlfriend.

Mud is very good. MatthewMConaughey is great as the title character Mud. And the two young leads are also strong.  The direction and cinematography is also very well done throughout, including great landscape shots.

Mud plays like a southern fairtyle infused with Mark Twain. There is fog when they are going to the island and it then disappears as they arrive, lending a sense of mystery and discovery.  There is also a sense of wonder around the boat, the island, and how Mud lives as seen through the eyes of the two boys.

Mud is seen by the boys as a mysterious heroic figure who fights for love. Due to each of the boys indiviual parental situations, they start to look up to him as a father figure, and belive him and start to act like him. As details emerge about Mud’s past, all is not as it seems.

There is also a sense of adventure. They explore the island and later the town for the things Mud needs. It’s kind of like Mark Twain with Huckberry Finn with 2 young boys, the Missisippi River, and disvovery and coming of age.

Love and relationships also plays a major role. Both Mud and Ellis fall in love throughout the course of the 2hr 10 min movie  and their lows and highs mirror each other as they both learn something from each other. Overall Mud is a very good dramatic movie.

Mud is rated PG-13 fors some violence, sexual references, language, thematic elements and smoking. I give Mud a wet A-.
