2014 is going to be a great year for movies. There are blockbusters and indies that show promise. The only month that looks like it will not have that much to offer is January, which is not surprising. That is normally not a good month and used for cheap horror and limited release expansions from 2013 movies. Besides that, the other months all have promising movies.
February
The Monuments Men, which was delayed from 2013 for effects work, is about a platoon in WW2 who retrieved art paintings before they were destroyed. It has a big cast, looks very good and releases on the 7th.
Non-Stop, which stars Liam Nesson, has him trying to stop a person who is threatening to kill someone on the plane every 20 minutes unless he sends money to an account. It will not be smart or logical, but it looks like a fun movie to not think about. It comes out on the 28th.
March
300 : Rise of an Empire opens the month on the 7th. A sequel to 300, the Greek general Themistokles tries to lead all of Greece into a charge that will change the course of the war. It looks like the original, which I liked a lot.
Opening that same day, is director Wes Anderson’s new movie, The Grand Budapest Hotel which looks very much his style. If you are into that, then check out the trailer. And if you don’t like his style, then you probably won’t want to watch it. The plot is about the hotel’s concierge and his lobby boy and the events that happen.
Out on the 21st is Bad Words. This is Jason Bateman’s directorial debut about a man who found a loophole that allows him to participate in a kid’s spelling bee. It screened and was picked up at Toronto International Film Festival and looks very funny.
Also out on the 21st is Divergent, an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth about a future where factions are the main way of life. Tris discovers she is divergent and needs to hide that secret. It looks okay and I have hope from having read the book.
The last movie of March is Noah, directed by Darren Aronofsky and stars Russel Crowe. It is a new vision of the Biblical story. It looks great with strong visuals.
April
Opening on the 4th, is Captain America : The Winter Soldier, a sequel to the 2011 original. It looks like a mix of action and political thriller.
Also opening this week is Don Hemmingway. It’s about a man who is a London crook that wants payment after being in jail for keeping his mouth shut. It looks hilarious and Jude Law looks fantastic in the lead.
On the 18, is Transendence. This is Wally Pfister’s debut, who was the cinematographer for Christopher Nolan. The story is about a man whose brain is uploaded into a computer. I have not seen the trailer but the cast and director are strong.
May is the beginning of the summer blockbusters –
Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens the season on May 2. It looks crowded and the last part of the trailer looks like a video game, but the first one was great so hopefully it won’t be the convoluted mess it looks like.
On the 9th, is Neighbors. This film is about a couple played by Seth Rogen and Rose Bryne. They get new neighbors in a frat house led by Zac Efron. It becomes a war of sabotage and looks hysterical. This is The End was one of my favorite comedies of 2013, so this should be fun.
The next week has one of my most anticipated movies of the year in Godzilla on the 16th. No plot details have been released except one excellent teaser. If the movie can live up to the teaser, it will be the best movie of the summer.
On the 23th, is X-Men Days of Future Past. The plot is Wolverine is sent into the past to find young Xaiver and young Magneto. It has most of the orignal cast joining the new cast and looks fantastic.
June
On the 6th is Edge of Tomorrow about a solider in an alien war who gets in contact with the aliens and repeats the day over and over again.
On the 13th is 22 Jump Street. It’s the same as the first one except they move across the street and are undercover in college. It looks like a lot of fun like the original was.
On the 20th, is Jersey Boys which is an adaptation of the musical which should be good with the music and the lead is the lead of the original cast from the musical.
July
On the 11th is Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. A sequel to the 2011 original, the plot involves the apes vs the humans. The first teaser was recently released and based of of that, it should be fantastic.
The following week is Jupiter Ascending by the Wachowskis. It is about Jupiter who dreams about the stars after being predicted to do something but cleans toilets until she meets Caine and Jupiter realizes what she is meant for. I have not seen the trailer but the Wachowskis should deliver with their track record recently with the very underrated Cloud Atlas and the underrated Speed Racer.
August
On the 1st is Guardians of the Galaxy. This is a new Marvel movie and based off of the leaked trailer, looks very fun.
Then on the 15th is The Expendables 3. The first two were a lot of fun so this should be as well along with the new additions.
Then on the 29th is Jane Got a Gun which will be interesting because of all the production problems that it went through.
September
The first is The Maze Runner on the 19th. Based off of the book with the same name, it’s about a group of boys trapped in a glade and everything changes when a girl is sent up. The book was very good and hopefully this will be as well.
The second is the Boxtrolls on the 26th and is the latest feature from the makers of Paranorman.
October
On the 4th is David Fincher’s adpatation of Gone Girl. This is one of my most anticipated movies of the year. I read the book recently and loved it. The casting choices are great and should make for a fantastic movie.
The other movie is The Judge on the 11th. It sounds good and stars Robert Downey Jr.
November
On the 7th, my most anticipated movie of the year comes out called Interstellar. It’s the new movie by Chris Nolan who has done Inception and The Dark Knight Trilogy. The only material officially released is a excellent teaser.
The 14th is Fury, which sounds like it could be good, about a tank crew in World War 2.
The 21st is part 1 of the finale of The Hunger Games.
December
On the 12 is Exodus directed by Ridley Scott staring Christan Bale in the tale of Moses.
On the 17th, the finale to The Hobbit trilogy is released.
On Christmas Day, there is Into The Woods. Which is a film adaptation of the musical of the same name directed by Rob Marshall.
There is also Unbroken, adapted from the book of the same name.
Undated is Inherent Vice, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
