Note : Sorry for no new reviews. This is the first new movie I have seen since The Artist.
If you like epic sci-fi action war movies then John Carter is for you. John Carter stars Taylor Kitsch as John Carter, Lynn Collins as Dejah Thoras, Ciran Hinds as Tardos Mors, Dominic West as Sab Than, and Daryl Sabara as Edgar Rice Burroghs. It also includes the voices and motion captures of William Dafoe as Tars Tarkas, Samantha Morton as Sola, and Thomas Haden Church as Tai Hajus.
John Carter is about the titular character ( John Carter) gets mysteriously transported to Mars. He gets captured by the Tharks ( giant 4 armed aliens). Eventually, John Carter is dragged into a war between 2 human cites with a beautiful princess.
John Carter is an epic sci-fi war movie that happens to be set on Mars. At some points it feels like a toned down Conan the Barbarian ( No sexual content in this movie). There are a few flaws though. It starts out slow for the first 30 or so minutes, but then once all the main characters are together and the plot figures it’s self out. It also can not figure out if it is a sci-fi or a western when the action is very briefly on Earth. Once the plot figures itself out, the movie gets much better. There are epic large scale battles with John Carter fighting a huge number of enemies. The battles are very well done and epic. There is also comic relief. John Carter’s ” dog” follows him around everywhere and runs at insane speeds. It also adores and licks him like crazy. The other one i can not reveal because it would give too much away. ( Hint : First group of people he runs into on Mars is when it happens.) The surprise ending is very well thought out and very well done. ( Hint : It happens on Earth.) It also references the book it is based off of and it pays subtle tribute with one of the characters. Overall, John Carter is a good sci-fi movie.
John Carter is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action. I give John Carter a red B+.
I agree that the beginning was way too slow moving and not necessary. The ending though was spectacular. I’m just sorry Disney didn’t do so well financially on this one. It may mean they are less likely to do more big budget films like this one.
