If you like good stylish adaptations then this version of The Great Gatsby is for you. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Magurire as Nick Caraway, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchnan, Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchnan, Elizabeth Drecki as Jorden Baker and Jason Clarke as Wilson.
The Great Gatsby is yet another film adaptation of the great novel The Great Gatsby. Gatsby is set in the Roaring 20’s. Nick Caraway moves to West Egg and happens to be next door to the mysterious Jay Gatsby. Caraway then goes to visit his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom. Daisy hears Gatsby’s name and is questioning where he is . Nick finds out that they were in love before the war. Gatsby wants to be with Daisy so Nick sets them up while they cannot alert Tom to their relationship.
The Great Gatsby is a well done stylish adaptation of a great novel. From the beginning, you can tell that this is a Baz Luhrmann movie. It is very stylized throughout, even when there is no party. It feels like some use of effects are right out of last year’s CGI epic Life of Pi, even when there are no big events happening on screen. That is not even during the party sequences. The party sequences are huge, lavish and expansive with tons of stuff occurring on screen. That’s without the music included. During the first party when Nick walks in to the main hall, pop party music starts playing and it is all very well done ( I was not able to view the 3D version. Instead only seeing the 2D. The party scenes were most likely more impressive in 3D, but they were still very well done in 2D) Even if they run on a little longer then they should have.
Through all of this style, the main story still is there, even if it only shines through in the 2nd half after the parties happen and the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy is exposed. This part is also good, moving along at a brisk pace with good scenes. Unlike the occasional good scenes that get drawn out in the 1st half. There are some major changes from the book that do end up changing some major parts and characters towards the end. Overall, The Great Gatsby is a good stylish adaptation of a great novel.
The Great Gatsby is rated PG-13 for some violent images, sexual content, smoking, partying and brief language. I give the Great Gatsby a stylish B+.
