Man of Steel review

Man of SteelIf you like epic action movies with character devolpment then Man of Steel is for you. It stars Henry Cavil as Kal El/Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Micheal Shannon as General Zod, Russel Crowe as Jor El, Kevin Conster as Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Lawerence Fishburne as Perry White, and Anjte Truija as Farora.

Man of Steel is a new vision of Superman’s origin story. It starts on Krypton with Kal El’s birth and then the subsequent destruction of Krypton. It then cuts to Earth and shows Kal El doing odd jobs until on one of these he encounters a ship from Krypton. He discovers his real powers and then Zod arrives and he has to defeat Zod and save Metropolis.

Man of Steel is a epic action movie with character devolpment. The action is epic both on Krypton and Earth as the fighters fly through buildings and the sky and it’s all  epic and looks great. It is enough action to satisfy the action fan, especially in the climax and the beginning.

Besides all of the action there is character development. You get the feeling of who Superman is, what he stands for, and how he became who he is (kind of like Batman in Batman Begins) through flashbacks to his childhood on Earth and what he does when he is wandering around performing odd jobs and meandering from town to town.

The movie is fast paced and never feels long even though it clocks in at 143 min, or 2hr 23 min. One very smart decision made by the scriptwriters was to spend more time on Krypton, allowing for you to get an insight into the culture and the inner workings of Krypton that also provides motives for several characters for their actions both on Krypton and on Earth. Krypton also looks great visually.

The acting is also great with all the actors nailing their roles. Cavil is great as Superman and combining his performance and the story allows you to understand and feel for the character. The supporting actors are great as well. Amy Adams is lively as Lois Lane and her chemistry with Cavil feels alive. Crowe and Costner as Superman’s biological and adopted father are terrific with several touching secnes . Lane also delivers a performance of high quality  as Martha who is Superman’s adopted mother and she has several secnes with Cavil. Micheal Shannon is commanding as Zod and delivers a great villan performance. His 2nd in command is noteworthy as well.

The score is great, kicking in at just the right moments, adding emotions to some already emotional and touching scenes. Overall, Man of Steel is a great superhero movie with epic action, character development, a great story, great acting and a great score.

Man of Steel is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, and for some language. I give Man of Steel a steel A.
