Flight Review

FlightIf you like character studies then Flight is for you. It stars Denzel Washington as Whip Whitaker, Kelly Riely as Nicole, John Goodman as Harling Mays, Don Cheadle as Hugh Lang, Melissa Leo as Ellen Block, and Bruce Greenwood as Charlie Anderson.

Flight is about the days following a flight that Whitaker was the pilot of that crashed.  He saved over 100 lives and is being hailed as a hero. But his drug addiction is revealed and that he drank  the night before the flight, as that and the investigation collide.

Flight is a character study. While the marketing made the movie look like it was mainly about the investigation into the crash, it is mostly about his drug addiction. That is not a bad thing because the movie as a whole is a very good character study/cautionary tale.   But be warned and know what you are walking into, which is a dark character study that doubles as a cautionary tale.

Denzel Washington is great as the troubled captain Whip Whitaker. He cannot get over his addiction and his friends cannot stop him. The supporting cast is good as well. Goodman is hilarious in his brief role as Whitaker’s drug dealer and the rest of the supporing cast is also well acted.

The movie is a character study about these troubles and is also a cautionary tale about the dangers and darkness of addiction and the bad effects of drugs and alchol.

The plane crash sequence is just as well done as the trailer makes it looks. It is very well shot with tight shots of the cockpit and what is occuring inside the main plane. It is also intense with the tension palpable throughout the plane. Overall, Flight is a very good well acted character study with well done plane crash sequence.

Flight is rated R for drug and alcohol abuse, language, sexuality/nudity and an intense action sequence. That is accurate. The movie opens with a long secne that includes a lot of female nudity and there is a lot of drug use and drinking. I give Flight a flying B+.
