Elysium Review

ElysiumIf you like very good  sci-fi with great visuals, acting, and action then Elysium is for you. It stars Matt Damon as MaxDeCosta, Jodie Foster as Secretary Delacorte, Sharlto Copley as Kruger, and Wagner Maura as Spider.

Elysium is set in the future where Earth has become overpopulated so the rich move to Elysium. Cut to Earth and Max who wishes to go there but can’t. Something happens, and he has to get up there with the help of Spider while being chased by Kruger who works for the Secretary of Defense , Delacorte.

Elysium is a good sci-fi movie with great visuals, acting, and action. The main problem is the beginning. It’s slow paced , taking it’s time setting the universe and the two different world up. It feels very heavy handed, pushing it’s message hard but once the story really starts (about a half hour in) the rest of the movie moves foward at a much faster pace and is much much better.

The rest is a good sci-fi action movie that is well acted and has great visuals. First, the visuals. They look great, both on the dirty Earth and then the pristine Elysium which looks like a combination of the Citadel from Mass Effect and the Halo rings from Halo. There is a good amount of contrast between the 2 worlds while still looking like they exist in the same universe.

The action is great and is evenly divided between the 2 worlds and even in space between them. While there is some shakey cam, I didn’t find it to be too distracting. It it also visceral with gore and there are some cool weapons and slow mo.

It is also well acted. Damon is good but Foster has this wierd accent. On the supporting side, Copley and Maura are both fantastic  and steal all of their secnes. Overall, Elysium is a good heavy handed sci-fi movie with great visuals, great action, and good acting.

Elysium is rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout. I give Elysium a high B.
