If you like true story thrillers then Captain Phillips is for you. It stars Tom Hanks as Richard Phillips and Barkhad Abdi as Muse.
Captain Phillips is the true story of Captain Richard Phillips of the Maserk Alabama who in the spring of 2009 was targeted and taken hostage by a band of Somali Pirates who wanted money in exchange for letting them go.
Captain Phillips is a fantastic true story thriller. It is well acted, well directed and is gripping even though you may know what happens at the end. It also has some of the most intense moments of the year in an overall very intense thrilling movie.
Unlike lesser true story thrillers that are not as good if you know what happened, Captain Phillips is still gripping due to the direction, acting, and overall level of intenstity that is presistent throughout the entire movie even though the middle is not as intense as the beginning and end, it is still building to the level at the end.
It is well directed even though there is a lot of shaky cam. It does work for the movie and the situtations so it is not a distraction but a plus unlike a lot of other movies recently that employed shaky cam and failed.
It is also well acted. Tom Hanks is fantastic especially in the last act where he gets his Oscar moment. The pirates are great as well led by the also fantastic Barkhad Abi . Overall, Captain Phiilps is a fantastic intense well made thrilller.
Captain Phillips is rated PG-13 for sustained intense sequences of menace, some violence with bloody images, and for substance use. I give Captain Phillips a captaining A. Between all of the current big releases, I recomend this one.
