American Hustle Review

American Hustle is fantastic. It’s fun and fast paced. It also has one of the strongest ensemble casts of 2013 and has a great direction style.  Then, it has one of the best soundtracks of the year and some of the best wigs and costumes.

American Hustle opens with the old studio logos followed by text that reads “some of this actually happened”. It opens with Irving Rosenfeld  (Christan Bale) fixing his hair and going to check on the current state of ABSCAM. He goes to the control room where he watches the tape and Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) walks in with Richie DiMasio (Bradley Cooper).  They go into the room that is being taped to set up the mayor of Camden, Carmen Polito (Jeremy Renner). Richie attemps to pass the briefcase to the mayor but his associate wants the Sheik that they promised to hand it over. Ronsenfeld leaves the room to go get him. It then flashbacks to his and Prosser’s first meeting and their falling for each other.  Leading to them becoming a con team. They are busted by DiMasio who will let them go if they con other con men which leads them to the mayor of Camden, Polito.

American Hustle is a comedy. Do not go in expecting a serious movie but a very fun movie. The script is very witty with great dialogue. Something else that is very funny, are the wigs. All of the lead’s hair is hilarious with the style. It may seem like that is a bad thing but it is not. The direction style is also great. There are great shots and a visual style that puts you into the 70’s style.  While some shots are very funny of how the costumes and wigs combine.

The soundtrack is one of the best of the year. It has some great rock and roll songs from the era that play. That keeps the energy alive throughout which is one of the great things about American Hustle. Whether it’s the comedy, the direction or the soundtrack, there is a great energy that keeps everything going and alive. The fast pace also contributes to the energy and vibe.

The ensemble cast is one of the best of the year. Bale is fantastic and Adams delivers her career best. Cooper, Lawerence and Renner are also strong. Louis C.K. is hilarious as Cooper’s boss and there is a great cameo. Overall, American Hustle is a fantastic fun and fast well made movie with an excellent soundtrack.

American Hustle is rated R for pervasive language, some sexual content and brief violence. I give American Hustle an American A.
