War Horse Review

If you like epic war films with family drama then War Horse is for you. War Horse stars Jeremy Irvine as Albert Narracott, Peter Mullan as Albert’s father Ted Narracott, Emily Watson as Ted’s wife and Albert’s mother Rose Narracott, David Thewils as their landlord Lyons, and Tom Hiddleston as Captain Nicholls.

War Horse starts when  a family buys and raises a horse named Joey during the peroid right before World War 1 in England. World War 1 then erupts and  to pay off the landlord ,Joey is sold to the army and becomes a war horse in the calvary.

War Horse is good and is very sad. It is sad in many parts and intensely shows  the horrible side of war with battle scenes and dead bodies of humans and  horses.  The movie is very well done and does not dwell on the bloodshed instead using quick shots to show the war’s aftermath and devastation. The movie does have a somewhat  happy ending but there is a lot of sadness before the final scene. The Horses are played by real horses and were very well trained because they seem like they behave like regular horses would act in the situation they are in. They are really the central characters of the movie . The 2 main horses are Topthorn and Joey. They go through most of the movie together until a sad moment occurs.

War Horse is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of war violence and there are  serveral  war scenes with some secondary and primary characters dying. When there are war scenes they are fast moving and quick without any gore. It is  expertly directed by Steven Spielberg and a lot of the war scenes seem and look like a toned down, gentler version of Normandy from Saving Private Ryan. Because of the intense sadness of the movie, I would not recommend this movie to young children even though it is PG-13 and  the advertising potrays  it  as a family horse drama with some war. I give War Horse an A-.
